I completed my first “proper” year and a bit of training without taking a single week off.
Contrary to appearances, this is not a brag.
It was just what I chose to do at the time.
Why?
Fear, mainly.
Truth be told, I was terrified that if I took a week off I wouldn’t return.
Maybe my fear was well founded, maybe it wasn’t. Nevertheless, it drove me to take a silly decision that had some pretty gnarly consequences.
For example, joint pain and fatigue that simply would not shift no matter how much I slept. Both getting so bad that I actually convinced myself I had leukaemia at one point.
What changed?
I’m not sure.
All I remember is sitting at a bus stop in Bristol one late summer afternoon having just viewed the room I was going to stay in during my first year at university, furiously googling:
“Will I lose my gains if I take a week off the gym”
“When is it OK to take a week off the gym”
“How to take a week off the gym”
And so on.
A dozen articles later, I decided I would take three days off. (A full week was still a bridge too far, even though I knew it’d do me good and I wouldn’t lose any of my progress.)
Lo and behold, the “mini-break” helped a lot.
Yet I still didn’t take a full week until probably November, maybe later – I can’t quite recall.
In any case, I now take full weeks (and even fortnights) off of all training (lifting and hard cardio) on a fairly regular basis.
Far more often than most, I have observed.
However, this doesn’t cause me to fall off the wagon, and, in fact, contributes greatly towards my continued progress because they are planned using the guidelines I have reproduced in January’s issue of “The Phil Tyreman Letter”.
“The Phil Tyreman Letter” is my old fashioned Real Paper Newsletter wherein I teach clients my nefarious ways.
Subscribers also get:
* Virtually Unlimited Support (ask me anything I am qualified to answer via email, text, or voice note and get a swift, definitive response)
