Why you should never listen to extremists

Cardio and lifting go together like clubs and baby seals.

Theirs is a symbiotic relationship.

Do one without the other, and the physique you so richly desire will forever remain tantalisingly out of reach.

It may surprise you to learn that mine is a minority opinion.

I shall explain:

On the one hand, you have fat meatheads who lift exclusively because they believe cardio is for weak skinny-fat losers.

On the other, you have effete soyboys who only do cardio because they believe lifting is the pursuit of the toxically masculine who are probably all sort words ending in -ist.

Both groups are wrong, obviously.

That’s why people who do nothing other than lift heavy things are typically overweight, if not obese to the point that they dread taking their shirt off in public. (I’ve had many of them tell me as much and, for a time, I felt the same).

And those who only pound the pavements?

They might (stress: might) be a healthy weight, but they still jiggle like jelly on a plate.

My point?

Twofold:

1. The truth almost always lies somewhere in the middle, so beware those who hold extreme opinions one way or the other. Seldom are they correct and mostly they’re doing it to give you a hit of that sweet, sweet dopamine so you buy their half-baked “solution”.

And,

2. Find some way to incorporate both lifting and cardio into your training. I know this age-old advice isn’t especially exciting and probably only gives you the tiniest spurt of dopamine, but it’s the *only* advice that’ll see you to the body you want without recourse to a pants-on-head stupid diet or potentially deadly PEDs.

March’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter will help you with this.

Here’s a peek at what’s inside:

* The three reasons why most men who lift weights do little or no cardio. If you find yourself starting a cardio routine and then stopping again I can almost guarantee at least one of these reasons applies to you, and unless you understand *why* you’re struggling you’ll forever remain trapped in this most pernicious of cycles.

* Why cardio is the ultimate “ego check” for men who are respectably (or even just fairly) strong.

* The two forms of cardio and how their symbiotic relationship means that if you do one without the other, you’ll never get results worthy of all your hard work.

* How to get into shape very quickly – in under two hours per week. (I seldom make bold claims like this, but on this occasion, I’ve no qualms in doing so because it’s simply the truth – subject to the obvious caveat of you Doing The Work™).

* A step-by-step guide to building your own cardio routine from scratch. My process requires effort and a healthy dose of critical thinking, but learning how to create your own programme is infinitely better than being spoon-fed cookie-cutter nonsense.

* How often you should do a certain type of cardio depending on your specific training goals.

* What I believe to be the best cardio duration for fat loss. (Some vehemently disagree with me on this while others think I’m a genius. All I know is what I suggest works very well, in my experience).

* A big (but by no means exhaustive) list of different types of cardio activities to get your cogs whirring.

* Two (almost) “plug and play” cardio programmes to propel you towards a fitter, healthier, and better body. I know I implied the best programme is the one you write yourself, but it would be remiss of me to not at least give you a framework for inspiration – so I’m giving you two.

* Perhaps the most brutal parting words I have ever committed to paper and ink. They’re certainly not for the faint of heart, but every word is true and written with your long-term success in mind.
