The biggest downside of getting into shape is the profoundly positive impact it will have on your wife/girlfriend.
Yes, I said “downside”.
Let me explain:
Lately, I’ve really gotten my act together in the training department.
While I’ve trained week in, week out without fail for the last 14 and a bit years (barring planned rest weeks), and have achieved respectable results by doing so, I’ve hitherto been inconsistent in two areas:
1. Diet (specifically, portion control). And,
2. Cardio (in that I’ve never done it with discipline for an extended period).
This is no longer the case, and the results speak for themselves – as you would expect.
What I did not expect was the effect it would have on Jess.
It started around last November when she saw me doing all this cardio and got it into her head that she’d like to do it too.
Then, when I started getting up at 0415 every day to go for a walk/run, she decided she was going to go out at 0630 to do the same. (I go out that early to ensure I’m back in time to make breakfast, help her with the kids, etc.).
Now she’s gone and entered a 10k race… and… she’s decided to follow the demanding lifting programme that features in my latest book.
So why on Earth is this a problem?
Simply, it means I have to stay at the top of my game.
I can’t stop waking up at forsaken o’clock to venture out into the frigid dark.
Once I’m outside, I can’t slack on my walk/runs.
I’ve gotta keep my portions under control.
Otherwise, there’s a non-zero chance she’ll up and leave me for some 6ft tall Chad with a 6-pack.
(And Chad will take her even though she’s 32 and has two kids because she’s in peak physical *and* mental condition).
Anyway, as we’re talking about what the ladies like, it’d be remiss of me not to mention that this month’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter explains how to build a large, shapely, and healthy back.
Here’s a quick overview of what’s inside:
* The ultimate back training system for men who want to be mistaken for an upside-down pizza slice.
* Two straightforward ways to incorporate weighted vest work into your routine. (You can do one, both, or neither depending on your goals and situation).
* The three significant reasons why the back takes the inglorious crown of “second least trained muscle group”.
* Why it’s best to take a “high-frequency, low/moderate intensity” approach to training back if you want to get bigger and stronger quickly – while mitigating the risk of a serious injury. (And, of course, how to do it).
* The “choose your own adventure book” approach to picking back exercises I’ve used for many years to keep training back fun and fresh, without compromising my results.
There’s more, naturally.
The deadline to subscribe in time to receive February’s issue is this Friday (9th).
