Recently I offered to critique my email subscribers’ training programmes for no charge.
All barring a tiny handful of the programmes I reviewed were chock full of what I call “junk work” (i.e. broadly unproductive volume).
This makes it very hard to build strength (of both limit and repping varieties). And given that strength is the foundation of all athletic ability and physical development, little to no forward progress gets made for many months and often many years.
What drives the desire to include redundant exercises?
In my experience, one or a combination of three things:
1) Fear of not doing “enough”,
2) Unwillingness to spend time mastering the most productive movements,
3) Ignorance of how to set up a programme that is both effective and sustainable.
Obviously there is nothing anyone can do to help someone who is struggling with number two.
But numbers one and three are fairly straightforward to remedy with the right information and support, such as what you will get when you subscribe to “The Phil Tyreman Letter”.
