The ugly truth about PEDs

This article will upset some people.

What is it that I have to say that’s so very offensive?

Simply this. I think people who take PEDs, gear, steroids, or whatever else you want to call them are stupid.

Here is why: You may have seen the 2008 documentary called, Bigger, Stronger, Faster by Christ Bell. In it, the presenter (who I think is Mr. Bell himself, though I’m happy to be corrected) speaks to an expert on steroids. This expert, when asked whether or not these substances are dangerous, replies with words to the effect of, “If they’re so dangerous, where are all  the bodies?”

Actually, there are a lot of bodies. And, no, they’re not all professional bodybuilders taking grams and grams of the stuff every week.

Take, for example, the sad case of a 24-year-old reported in the medical journal Forensic Sciences Research

With a BMI of just 26.8 (weight 85kg, height 178cm), this guy wasn’t “big” by any stretch of the imagination. And yet, steroid use resulted in him having an enlarged heart and a severe buildup of fat and cholesterol on the walls of arteries supplying the heart. The latter caused a fatal heart attack.

The authors conclude the paper by agreeing with others in the medical field that steroid abuse is a public health issue, and I quote, “because of self-administration that is particularly widespread among non-athletes at fitness centers with aesthetics goals”

I get it, jumping on gear becomes a more attractive proposition as you age, and by “age” I mean any time from your early 30s onwards.

Your body doesn’t respond to training like it used to. You ache more. It gets harder and harder to keep body fat at bay.

But… and it’s a huge but…

it’s still a stupid idea.

Therefore, if you take the easy option (and it IS the easy option) you’re stupid.

I can’t see how anyone who’d risk leaving their partner bereaved and/or their kids fatherless for the sake of having bigger muscles could be described as anything else.

So…

… don’t be stupid!

Do the right thing, work hard, and get the results nature intended.
