About twelve years ago, I decided I wanted to get very lean.
I’d put on a lot of weight at university in the pursuit of building a solid foundation of muscle. (A pursuit I was successful in).
However, my success was accompanied by a warped sense of how much of that weight was fat.
A lot of guys have this problem.
They hit the gym hard and their bodies change shape for the better in a matter of months or, in some cases, weeks.
Their back thickens, shoulders round, chest expands, arms bulge, and legs swell. And all of this is (rightly) greeted with delight.
But.
With this growth comes fat.
Often, a lot of fat.
(Particularly if you don’t inject goodness knows what into your backside).
Which brings us back to my story:
I believed a six pack wasn’t far away, so I went to my favourite website at the time (T-Nation) and found a two week fat loss protocol written for people who are already lean to get into their best possible shape for a photoshoot.
I’m sure it was a very effective programme – for the intended audience.
An audience that certainly did not include tubby ol’ me.
The result of my two weeks of hard graft?
Entirely predictable.
I didn’t look any different.
I also re-injured my lower back because I wasn’t used to training in anything other than a “super fed” state and the resultant tiredness meant I got sloppy on a set of deadlifts.
Yet another example of why it’s better to give yourself plenty of time to hit a goal because it’s almost always further away than you believe.
Which is why you should start training for summer now instead of scrambling to get into shape (and potentially injuring yourself) a month before the weather is due to get good.
To aid you in this, April’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter features a system called “Operation: Beach Body” that you can use to build a physique that looks every bit as good as it performs in preparation for the summer.
It’s a 12-week programme revolving around the most efficient and effective lifts for building strength and power, supplemented by plenty of arm, trap, and ab work because nobody argues with a man who has a thick neck, huge arms, and a strong midsection.
The deadline to subscribe in time to receive April’s issue is midnight GMT on Friday the 29th.
A subscription works out at £3.29 per day, which includes the newsletter, and direct access to me for any assistance I’m qualified to give, amongst other things.
None of this is to say you should subscribe, necessarily.
Read the below page (and subsequent Terms and Conditions page) very carefully to make sure your decision is a properly informed one:

P.S. Subscribers will also enjoy a bonus in April.
Specifically, a paper-and-ink copy of my report, “14 Lessons from 14 Years of Training”.
Concise to a fault, this little gem contains fourteen of my finest nuggets of wisdom you can apply to your own training to accelerate your results (and, most importantly, retain them for years to come).
