Lessons on hard work from a strung out addict

Lately, I’ve gotten back into listening to John Frusciante’s solo records (he’s been The Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s guitarist for the balance of the band’s existence).

I was actually quite the mega fan of his, back when I was at school. Searching for many months for a copy of his first album Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt (found it in the Oxford Street HMV while on a school trip).

I never did manage to get a physical copy of his second record, Smile From the Streets You Hold, that he recorded while strung out on drugs to the point of becoming, according to a 1996 article in New Times LA, “a skeleton covered in skin”, losing all of his teeth, and having his arms covered in abscesses from mainlining goodness knows what. Although I did listen to it a few times when it emerged on YouTube in recent years and… uhh… yeah… it’s everything you’d expect it to be.

Anyway, Frusciante’s work ethic and output is, at times, incredible. For example, in 2004, he recorded six full albums in just six months, mostly on analogue tape rather than in a fancy recording studio or so I have heard.

It’s a feat that inspired me greatly all those years ago. Indeed, one of my life’s ambitions was to create a comparable body of work in the same tight timeframe.

I managed that last year, writing something like 10 or so of my books (I have 20 now if I remember rightly) in roughly 9 months.

Am I telling you this just to be a braggart?

Perhaps.

But there’s a point to, and it is thus:

While I remain convinced that most of your training time ought to be “easy”, there is a case for knuckling down for 3-6 months to push very hard, maybe even flirting with your limits a little.

Sometimes you don’t have much of a choice if you want to lean out in particular.

In any case, if you subscribe to The Phil Tyreman Letter before the rapidly approaching deadline, November’s king sized (52 pages instead of the usual 20ish) issue contains a tough yet shockingly effective (at least in my experience and those of who I have tested it on) fat loss and conditioning protocol that I have called:

“Operation Winnow”

It ain’t easy. But even if you aren’t quite ready for it, there is still a metric tonne of valuable info to take, adapt, and apply for your own purposes.

Another thing: I will be selling it as a standalone book at some point and it will retail for somewhere north of £150 when I do.

But subscribers will be getting it for an almost derisory £20.

If you want it, subscribe before the deadline at the below URL:
