Lessons from a Mark Felix lookalike

At my university gym there was an absolute giant of a man called Roger.

A plasterer by trade, he bore an uncanny resemblance to fellow plasterer and World’s Strongest Man staple for two decades, Mark Felix.

He was basically as strong as him, too. OK, that’s a lie, but he was certainly one of the strongest blokes at that particular gym (which was one of the stronger I have trained in).

To illustrate the point, the guy moved 140kg bench presses for multiple sets of 10+ reps as if the bar weighed less than half that. A sight my brain actually struggled to compute, much like when you see astronauts floating around completing tasks in the International Space Station.

Anyway.

As well as being a true Titan, Roger was a top bloke – ever keen to offer support and advice to young lifters who had shown they take the activity seriously.

For example, one time I got it into my head that I needed to use incline dumbbell bench presses as the main exercise to grow my anaemic chest.

I have no idea what possessed me to go down this route, given that my barbell bench press was pitifully weak and I knew full well that rectifying that sorry state of affairs ought to have been my number one priority.

Yet plough away doing half reps with the 30kg dumbbells I did, until Roger caught me in the act.

A tap on the shoulder and some pointed questions followed (such as “Why are you wasting time with dumbbells if you want to grow your chest?”) leading to Yours Baldly immediately correcting his course.

Gains in size and strength to not just my chest but shoulders, arms, and upper traps followed.

Funny that.

I’m mentioning this because February’s issue of my cleverly titled Real Paper newsletter “The Phil Tyreman Letter” covers the art and science of training chest in exacting detail. (Full details of what’s inside the newsletter in the P.S.)

Subscribers also get:

* Virtually unlimited personal access to me for anything I am qualified to assist  with on the training front,

* A book that is exclusively available to newsletter subscribers,

* Other bonuses from time to time (this month subscribers are getting a video titled “The Art of Making Good Decisions” from one of my programmes which is no longer available for sale anywhere at any price).
