Jet Lag

Is something I have not experienced since a family trip to Florida around 1999.

(I cannot remember the exact year but it was certainly pre-9/11 because I remember being invited into the cockpit).

Why?

I don’t see the point in flying to another country for a holiday when some time away in the UK is perfectly fine.

A choice that lowers my so-called carbon footprint greatly. Not that it makes a difference to the Gaia-worshipping prophets of doom who scream the wOrLd Iz BuRnInG while sipping pumpkin-spiced latte and planning their next trip to Bali because I am not convinced that man-made climate change is a thing.

Excuse me, I digress.

I am mentioning jet lag because it roughly describes how I felt between 2011 and 2015 when I was working on the ambulances full time.

To give you a flavour of why, behold a typical week:

Monday: Off

Tuesday: 1900-0700

Wednesday: Off

Thursday: 0700 – 1900

Friday: 1200-0000

Saturday: 1300-0100

Sunday: Off

Keep in mind also that I was late off by at least an hour on probably 80% of my shifts and had a forty minute commute.

Even my most vociferous detractors must concede that I was able to train at all under those circumstances is impressive.

What’s more, I even built strength and muscle in those most difficult of times.

Not a tremendous amount, of course; but plenty enough to make training worthwhile and cope with the stress that job put on my body and mind.

One method I relied upon to keep the wheels turning were something I call:

“Take it easy workouts”

These are little sessions you can slot in when you have time (either in addition to or, in extremis, as a substitute for your regular workouts).

Using the above week as an example, I’d probably train thusly:

Monday: Off

Tuesday: 1900-0700 (“Take it easy workout” first thing in the morning to aid sleep)

Wednesday: Off (Regular workout in the afternoon after waking)

Thursday: 0700 – 1900 (“Take it easy workout” after work, if I felt up to it)

Friday: 1200-0000

Saturday: 1300-0100

Sunday: Off (Regular workout in the late morning after waking)

Anyway.

I explain how to construct these workouts in my book, Shift, which happens to be on sale today for an utterly monstrous discount to celebrate my birthday.
