“Junk Work” is the catch-all label I use for exercises that contribute little in the grand scheme of things.
Examples include (but are not limited to):
* Chest flyes
* Leg extensions
* Shrugs
* Cross chops
You get the idea.
The reason they are a problem is people spend far too much time on them, leaving precious little for the stuff that really moves the needle.
In fact, potential clients often come to me complaining they are making little (or no) progress and, upon examination, the cause is that upwards of two thirds of their workouts consist of Junk Work.
But.
And it is a big but.
Junk Work is fun.
Certainly more fun than Yet Another Set of heavy back squats or rows or overhead presses or deadlifts or whatever. What’s more, it tends to pump up your muscles like nothing else so you get to strut about the gym feeling like King Kong.
A shame that’s about all they are good for.
Unless you train in the manner described in May’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter, as it details a system for using these enjoyable exercises that are basically useless in any other context to build muscle and, potentially, repping strength.
More:
Provided you don’t eat like a degenerate, you will have a hard time not getting leaner using this method, as the pace of training (and therefore caloric expenditure) is much higher than you are probably used to.
