How to build an “inverted-nacho” back

Here are 7 huge benefits of having a thick, strong back:

1. Respect. Men with big arms and muscle-moobs are ten-a-penny but only a rare few have the sheer force of will required to build a powerful back, and everyone knows it.

2. Protection. At the very least, a back injury will terminate your ability to train productively for a long time, and it might stop you training altogether. A strong back is the best mitigation against this existential risk.

3. Utility. You ain’t shifting furniture or carrying your kids on your shoulders for a mile or more without a decent wedge of muscle covering your spine.

4. Attractiveness. Believe it or not, women find inverted-nacho backs alluring – oftentimes moreso than the “mirror muscles” guys put the most effort into building.

5. Fit. As in, your clothes will fit better because you’ll be shaped like a coathanger.

6. Pain relief. Modern life does a number on our bodies: Sitting at a desk, driving, fiddling with mobile phones, etc, etc. Over time, this can lead to chronic aching from your neck down, and one remedy is to build a back that’s robust enough to handle the punishment.

7. Posture. You’ll stand tall and proud, as every man should.

Those are just the first benefits that came to mind.

There are more, many, many more.

Of all the things you can do in the gym, only a handful will have as profound an impact as building a stronger, more muscular back.

Your lifts will go up (probably all your lifts, not just ones where the back is the prime mover), you’ll look better, you’ll stand taller, and you’ll gain the confidence that comes with knowing your strength has “real world” carryover.

So, train your back with discipline and intent. Give it the attention it deserves, and never, ever treat it like an afterthought. Because your quality of life depends on it.

In fact, this is so important I’ve devoted February’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter to revealing a suite of tactics you can use to build the powerful back all men need yet few possess.

Some of what I’m going to share is designed to fit alongside most sensible training programmes, so, if you feel it’s appropriate, you can start implementing it and reaping the rewards right away. (And if you’re not sure, you can just email me and I’ll either give you the green light or suggest an alternative).
