Many earnest and hardworking people worry greatly about taking a week off from training for fear of losing strength and muscle, getting fat, etc.
They are shooting themselves in the foot, in my humbly correct opinion.
Why?
‘Cuz this worry causes them to train too hard, for too long.
A commendable attitude, for sure – but not one that is conducive to being able to train productively (or at all) five, ten, twenty or more years from now.
Moreover, the worry is a baseless one because you will not lose appreciable amounts of muscle or strength or gain much or any body fat if you take a planned week or two off the gym.
Take a third week and you will probably notice a difference and by week four you will almost certainly start to notice things that make you a little uncomfortable.
But even then, provided you return to training using a sane, stepwise approach you will recoup what you lost very quickly (potentially within a couple of weeks if you didn’t act like a degenerate during your rest break).
Have you noticed the caveats?
The first is that your rest week(s) must be planned.
The second is that you must actually return to training promptly.
The third is that you must employ a considered approach to ease yourself back into it.
Mess up any one of these three, and you’re unlikely to reap the results-boosting rewards of taking regular time away from hard training.
Fortunately, I mansplain The Phil Tyreman Way of resting and recovering from training (including covering the above three points in detail) in January’s issue of “The Phil Tyreman Letter”.
