Feminists will hate this one

Below is an email I got from Jess.

She wrote it in response to my take on Princess Kate going to ground and the lessons we as men can take from it with regard to our attitude towards training:

===

“I chose to become a wife and mother, and when I fail to fulfil the duties expected of me as a wife and mother you rightly call me out on it.

A few things you have called me out on over the years:

– Keeping the house relatively clean and tidy

Dirty nappies on the floor was a step too far for even my very tolerant husband.

– Cook healthy meals

I was surprised to learn that processed seafood sticks and cucumbers don’t count as a well-rounded meal for our toddler. Especially not when it’s the 5th time this week she’s had it. I now know better.

– Ensure my children are clean, well behaved and appropriately stimulated with toys, books and activities

Becoming addicted to a colouring game on my phone was the closest I’ve come to neglecting the kids. It wasn’t that bad but you drew the line when I asked you to clean Marcus’ face after his tea so I could play on my phone undisturbed for another hour (or more). I should add you’d just finished work and were only in the kitchen/dining room to get a glass of water before you went out on your run.

None of that seems unfair, although it did at the time because it hurt my ego. I had fallen short of the high standards I’d set myself, which unsurprisingly hurt my self-image, which unsurprisingly caused my defences to go up.

The result?

I gave you lip.

It doesn’t mean you were wrong though.

But it does mean that I’m a better wife and mother for being held to those standards rather than you if you just “gave me a break”.

And I love you for that. Even if I gave you lip at the time.

Love you

Jess”

She only lets me hold her to those standards because I hold myself to even higher standards.

Especially when it comes to training diligently, eating sensibly, and living a healthy, happy life generally. Because if I didn’t do that, everything else would fall to pieces and I’d cease to be the man she (and my kiddos) deserve.

That was today’s lesson by the way.

It’s not flashy by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s something you have to get your head around if you want to get your missus to support your pursuit of your fitness goals.

Something else that isn’t flashy is April’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter.

Spring has sprung so I’ve decided to furnish you with a system called “Operation: Beach Body” that you can use to build a physique that looks every bit as good as it performs in preparation for the summer.

Obviously, I can’t promise you a 10/10 body because I’ve no idea of your starting point. (And even if I knew, I still wouldn’t make a promise like that because nobody can while remaining in integrity).

However, when properly applied, my system will help you make great strides towards that.

A subscription costs less than some bags of whey protein, and working with me will almost certainly do more for your physique than consuming a waste product from the cheese manufacturing process.

All the info is here:

Thank you,

Phil Tyreman

P.S. Subscribers will also enjoy a bonus in April.

Specifically, a paper-and-ink copy of my report, “14 Lessons from 14 Years of Training”.

Concise to a fault, this little gem contains fourteen of my finest nuggets of wisdom you can apply to your own training to accelerate your results (and, most importantly, retain them for years to come).
