“Ex-fat” goes on lengthy rant

You know the strongest critics of smokers are actually ex-smokers?

The same is true of how a great many “ex-fats” view the overweight and obese.

I should know, because I am a proud ex-fat who has no time whatsoever for those who are too feckless, lazy, and entitled to do anything meaningful about their porcine predicament.

The worst of the bunch are those who cry about “not having time” to train and eat right; a pathetic excuse that doesn’t stand up to the slightest scrutiny.

How do I know?

For starters I managed to avoid regaining the weight I’d previously lost by keeping a simple training regime and eating sensible quantities of Real Food while working a mixture of 8, 10, and 12 hour day, night, and “late” shifts (that often overran by upwards of two hours). Moreover, my rota followed no discernable pattern, meaning I was constantly flip-flopping from days to nights alongside brutal 1300-0100 and 1400-0200 lates.

Suffice it to say, I wasn’t making huge strides in the weightroom, although I did make a small amount of progress in aggregate. But more importantly than any of that, I kept the belly at bay, maintaining a relatively lean and muscular form despite often not knowing what day it was.

“But Phil, just because you managed it doesn’t mean others can”

Comes the inevitable (and in this instance, fair) counterpoint.

And it would hold water…

… if I didn’t have a bunch of clients who are monstrously busy running serious businesses, one salesman who galivants around the country selling – come to think of it, I’m not entirely sure what – new parents, and so on. All of whom find the time to train properly and the restraint to eat sensible quantities of what they know they ought to be eating.

Then there is my most important “client” of all, Jess (air quotes because I just give her my books and other writings then leave her to her own devices).

My thin, attractive wife won’t mind me saying she once bore an uncanny resemblance to a refrigerator (because she describes herself in those words), yet is now fitter, leaner, and stronger than she has ever been nary 12 weeks after giving birth to our third child. She also hasn’t missed a day of work since Lily was born, as client commitments meant she had to give birth on Friday and be back at her desk the following Monday, so it’s not like she’s on “maternity leave” with oodles of free time.

So I think it’s fair to say people who claim they “don’t have time” are liars because, the truth is, they don’t WANT to spend the time.

That’s OK, by the way. I respect greatly those who are honest enough to admit they’ve genuinely no interest in being strong and in shape and are willing to accept the consequences of that (an ugly form and, of course, potential disability and early death via preventable disease).

It’s not a choice I agree with, but you’ve got to tip your hat to someone who is brave enough to be so truthful.

The whingers, whiners, moaners, and complainers who say they want to be fit and healthy yet whose actions tell a very different story?

They can sling their hook, as far as I am concerned.

Doubly so as a sensible training regime takes very little time at all to execute and can be done for free at or close to home.

Like that which is described in July’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter.

This is a sequel to the June 2025 issue, but you DO NOT need to possess last month’s newsletter to reap the benefits as I’ve reproduced the bones of the training system it featured on Page 3, meaning you’ll have everything you need  to get started right away, plus as much support as I can reasonably give to help you put it into action.
