Few days back I had a call with the man who is easily the most earnest person I have ever had the privilege of working with (not sure he wants me naming him).
Proof of his superlative effort and attention to detail came when he casually mentioned how he’d taken what I wrote in one of these articles a couple of months ago and was using it to slice his rest periods down, thereby dramatically boosting the efficiency and effectiveness of his workouts.
The teaching he was benefitting from?
“The Ten Breath Challenge”
Which involves taking not more than ten deep breaths between sets. (It’s a spin on something I learned from studying the works of Vince Gironda.)
Obviously you need to apply some critical thinking to get this to work. For instance, it’s dumb to try and implement this or something like it using the weights you typically lift. Likewise, you don’t want to do it with movements that are higher risk for you (I’d never use it with any variation of the barbell squat because my hips and lower back are particularly vulnerable due to past injuries).
But if you are willing to do the thinking and take the ego knock that always comes with removing weight from the bar, using lighter dumbbells, and so on, there is potentially much to be gained through significantly curtailing your rest periods in this manner.
Perhaps even as much as what the chap I mentioned is gaining in strength and performance (and also losing in terms of body fat) via the programme he is on.
Alas, that particular course of study with coaching is no longer for sale (although it will be coming out in book form later this year).
However, you can still benefit from “black hole” dense workouts by following the instructions laid out in May’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter, and as a subscriber you will also benefit from whatever additional information and support you need to put it into practice.
