Can anyone else smell mouldy fish?

Triggered a PT at the gym the other day.

In my defence, I didn’t know he was a PT when we first started talking, although, to be fair, I wouldn’t have spoken differently had I known.

What upset him so?

Simply this:

I said that conventional personal training is a waste of money because all you’re paying for is for someone to tell you to do a selection of random exercises and, maybe, count your reps – but only if they can somehow manage to pry their eyes from the phone.

A recipe for success, this is not.

What’s more, they know whatever results their clients get won’t last – if, indeed, they get any results at all. That’s why they charge so little for what they offer. (If I remember rightly, the going rate for personal training is about £35 an hour).

It’s also why I charge as much as I do (£5000 for my 6-month coaching programme and £100/month for The Phil Tyreman Letter).

See, I know my stuff works because, fundamentally, what I provide is an education.

An 8, 10, or 12-week programme won’t give you lasting results, and if you’re hunting for that mystical Perfect Programme™ I suggest you stop because your quest is futile.

No. What gets you lasting results is learning the fundamentals.

How to write programmes. How to eat. How to fit everything in around your commitments to work and family. And so on.

It’s the difference between buying a fishing rod or a fish.

The former keeps you fed for as long as you use it. The latter goes mouldy after a few days.

I know which I would prefer to have.

Speaking of fish, I did a quick Google and found that The Phil Tyreman Letter is cheaper than a packet of sweetcure smoked mackerel strips from Tesco (a subscription works out at £3.29/day whereas the mackerel costs £3.60).

January’s issue teaches you how to program an entire year of training, so you’ll finish 2024 in much better shape than when you started it.

Thank you,

Phil Tyreman

P.S. I’ve set up a new Facebook group for men in my local area. It’s called East Yorkshire Men’s Fitness Mastermind.

This group is my way of “giving something back”. By that I mean, it’s not a marketing tool for my business per se. I expect some people who join will become clients/customers, but that’s not why I started the group. I did it because there’s a paucity of resources for hardworking men generally and nothing locally, so I figured I might as well do something about it.

If you wouldn’t mind joining to help me bump up the numbers, I’d appreciate it. (I need people to do this because nobody wants to join a Facebook group with barely any members).

To show my thanks, you’ll get an invite to a live Q&A I’m going to hold sometime between Christmas and New Year (date TBC).

Joining is free and takes seconds.

Here’s the group:
