Easily the biggest downside to percentage-based training programmes (i.e. programmes where you calculate weights based off an estimated or true max) is that they are inflexible.
Less of an issue for those who have no meaningful stress or hassle in their lives, but for the rest of us it’s a real problem.
Consider:
The programme calls you to lift 92.5% of your one rep max for three sets of three.
All well and good unless you’re knackered because your kid(s) kept you up all night or you’re drained because work has sucked your soul through your left nostril or your head is full to bursting with crises big and small that are yours and yours alone to manage.
Then what is technically an achievable weight is most likely going to staple you to the floor.
Worse:
Because your success on a percentage-based routine is predicated upon you hitting every rep of every set, when you fail in this manner all the work you have done up to that point is scuppered.
None of this is to say percentage-based programming is unsuitable.
Indeed, it’s still the best way to bust through plateaus in many scenarios.
The key is in the setup.
Specifically:
* Basing your calculations off of what you know for a fact that you can lift right now, today (not what you lifted that one time ten years ago or what you believe you can lift), and,
* Setting your target ever so slightly above those numbers.
I’m the first to admit these steps involve an ego check too far for most.
But if you are part of the respectable minority who are happy to work within their capabilities, and you want to set a suite of modest personal bests in the next 6 weeks you’d do well to at least learn a bit more about my latest creation:
“The Six Week Peak”
This programme is available for the Special Launch Price of £80 until 23:59 on Saturday the 8th of February.
You will also benefit from my (in)famous “Virtually Unlimited Support” for six weeks, to aid you in putting what you learn into practice.
But once the deadline has passed, the price goes up.
