All your base are belong to us

Ten internet points if you get that reference.

Anyway, it’s an appropriate introduction to the topic of today’s email which is building up your baseline.

Or “base building” as great author and trainer Paul Carter calls it.

I’m not saying my approach to developing a solid foundation is necessarily “better” than his. Just different. And in any case, you would do well to read about what he has to say on the subject (Google is your friend here).

But as for what I think.

Probably a good 80-90% of your training year should be spent plugging away at the same core group of exercises, using relatively light weights with a view towards increasing the challenge by one or a combination of reducing rest periods, doing more sets, and shooting for rep PRs rather than by relentlessly jacking up the weights you are using.

You will still need to lift heavier and heavier weights. But you’re better off nudging them up by the smallest possible increment, and even then, only when you can truly “dominate” a given load.

Much more sustainable doing it that way than trying to force it up because a spreadsheet says you must.

Despite using lighter weights on average, you’ll probably end up stronger over time, too; as you’re far less likely to rip a muscle in two or herniate a disc given that you will, by definition, never be lifting poundages you are not truly ready for.

On a related note, August’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter features a programme that’s perfect for building your baseline.

It’s so good, I’ll go out on a limb and say that if you follow it per my instructions for one year, you’ll likely wind up a whole lot stronger, healthier, and more vital than you are right now.

Nothing is guaranteed, of course. But if you’re tired of sweating bullets for little (or nothing) in return, I’ve got a whole load of stuff to sort you out.

That said…

The deadline to subscribe in time to get August’s issue is fast approaching, so I would make haste the the below linked page if I was you:

Thank you,

Phil Tyreman
