A “small progress note”

Came a note from one of my Phil Tyreman Letter subscribers:

===

“Small progress note: in the gym, in the big mirrored room (with favourable lighting), I can see abs (ie. A faint line at the top of my abdomen and a more muscular structure revealing that there are in fact abdominal muscles behind my gut). It might not sound like much, but seeing this progress has been significantly motivating for me as its been MANY years since been able to see any kind of abdominal definition/structure”

What we have here is the fruit of some seven months of patient, diligent work.

Obviously, results like those will not appeal to those unserious people who still think a great body is just 12 weeks away and are willing to pump themselves full of steroids and metabolic agents like clenbuterol or else lie to a doctor to get TRT, Ozempic, or some other “wonder drug” favoured by the vain, lazy, and stupid.

But I can’t help those people, and I wouldn’t want to if I could.

Forgive me, I digress.

To meander back to the subject at hand, my subscriber has made a whole lot of profoundly important progress.

How so?

He earned his results slowly and carefully, using what can be fairly described as an unobtrusive approach to training (he lifts twice weekly, runs twice weekly, and tries to take a short daily walk) that he has stuck with week in, week out (planned breaks aside) for the duration of our time together.

More:

He gives no thought whatsoever to his diet beyond trying to eat sensible quantities of food already knows he ought to eat, while minimising (but not eliminating) that which he already knows he ought not to eat (he does not count calories, track macros, weight, or measure his food intake at all because I unequivocally warn all of my clients adopting these behaviours is a quick way to develop an eating disorder).

This approach works (albeit slowly) because it is sustainable.

Ultimately, my objective for every single one of my merry band of subscribers is to get them the point that they cannot imagine a life without training in some way, shape, or form no matter how busy or stressed they get because that is the only way to forever break the pernicious cycle of training hard, getting results, falling off the wagon, and ending up in worse place than when they started.
