Is the following, in my opinion:
1) Find and pay an appropriately qualified MEDICAL professional (i.e. a physio or doctor, not a quack chiropractor or, heaven forefend, personal trainer) to diagnose the issue and prescribe an appropriate course of treatment.
2) Do exactly as they command (including all the parts you don’t like or agree with),
3) If (and only if) they clear you to resume training, spend a session or two making a big list of all the movements you can perform through a full range of motion without aggravating your injury in any way. Write them down as you go,
4) Work on getting good at a selection of the movements you wrote down (full body sessions using high-ish reps and a slow tempo tend to go well with this approach) until you are ready to return to your regular training,
5) Unless your registered doctor or physio gives you a programme of exercise to follow, in which case just do that.
A simple and effective approach, but one a lot of people are stubbornly resistant to, in my experience.
Perhaps it’s ego or maybe a distrust of allopathic medicine.
Whatever the case.
One thing that’s for certain is it’s a whole lot better to avoid getting injured in the first place.
That’s why October’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter explains my favoured methods for injury mitigation.
None of them are foolproof, of course. Train with discipline and intent for long enough and the chances are some injury or other will blight your progress and, depending on what you’ve popped, life in general.
But there are absolutely sensible steps you can take to minimise that risk and reduce the severity if and when injury strikes.
It’s honestly one of the most important issues I have ever written, containing plenty of “must know” info for anyone who still wants to be training productively ten years from now (or, indeed, training at all!).
