Bald man loses sleep over quitting the gym

I have a confession to make:

Believe it or not, I was actually extremely nervous about binning off my gym membership in favour of doing only bodyweight training and long-ish runs outdoors.

There were even a few nights in the immediate aftermath when I lost some sleep over my decision. Which is kinda funny when you consider how often I highlight the disordered relationship a lot of people in the fitness industry (and their acolytes) have with exercise.

Moving on…

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that my fears were completely unfounded.

In fact, ditching the gym in favour of the great outdoors has been hands down the best training decision I have made so far this decade and a firm contender for the best training decision I have ever made, so profound have the results been.

First and foremost are the physical benefits:

I cannot remember a time when fat has come off my frame so easily or, indeed, as quickly. The closest contender was in the months leading up to my wedding wherein I followed a pants-on-head stupid diet and frankly monstrous training regime, both of which were anything but easy (and the whole charade would have made me blind in one eye, had one of the many clots that formed on my retina spread a fraction of a millimetre further).

Jess is delighted by this for obvious reasons. Although I somewhat resent having to go out and buy a bunch of new tracksuits and shorts because my old ones fall down now, no matter how tight I pull the drawstrings.

Performance-wise, my pullup strength has gone through the roof. To be fair, this is to be expected with how many I am doing per week, but in any case it’s cool to see the numbers per set tick up, more challenging variations become accessible, and so on.

Likewise, I can now eat for breakfast running routes that have hitherto been impossible for me to manage more than once per week. (The only thing holding me back from going even further is a combination of boredom and pain in my feet from buying the wrong type of trainer for my foot.)

Next come the psychological advantages of this method of training:

No longer do I have to put up with being surrounded by women cavorting basically naked as they film promotional content for their OnlyFriends accounts, drugged-up Deanos leaving pus from their bacne all over everything, and phone-zombies who need ten minutes to scroll between sets, forcing me to alter my training because they take forever to use a bit of kit

Instead, I get to enjoy the peace and quiet of my local park. Birds tweeting, trees swaying, the scent of freshly mown grass – all that good stuff. And as a result, I feel more rested, get less stressed out by the trials of life, and, most curiously, am much less interested in the news (especially where it concerns things I cannot influence in any way).

I’ve no proof of any of this. But if you think I am the sort of person who would lie about results to make sales, you’ve not been paying attention so I recommend you unsubscribe immediately.

Otherwise, if I have “sold” you on this way of training, I recommend you subscribe to “The Phil Tyreman Letter” before the looming deadline because June’s issue reveals, in some considerable detail, my outdoor training methodology.

If you are keen on the idea of not training in a gym but also don’t want to train outdoors, everything I teach in this issue can be done at home with very little equipment that is easily acquired.
