Behold 7 great reasons not to pursue new personal bests in the big barbell lifts:
1) You’re ill or injured,
2) You’re chasing some other goal that’s antithetical to gaining strength (e.g. running a 10k),
3) You’ve recently done exactly this and are feeling crispy as a result (it is possible to run peaking programmes back to back in certain cases, but you absolutely shouldn’t if you’re all beaten up from the effort),
4) You’ve been training diligently and consistently for under a year,
5) You’re genuinely happy with where you’re at, strength-wise,
6) You’ve got a lot going on in life (busy with work, kiddos going through a sleep regression, etc.),
7) You have grand delusions about adding 20+kg to your lifts in a matter of weeks or even months.
There are certainly more than these, but they are what came to mind today.
Now that you have seen seven great reasons not to go chasing new one rep maxes, visit the below link to discover seven great reasons why it IS a stellar idea.
The webpage I am sending you to is a pitch for my latest creation, “The Six Week Peak”, which is available for the Special Launch Price of £80 until 23:59 on Saturday the 8th of February. But in my biased opinion it is worth reading whether you intend to cross my palm with coin or not:
