A disturbing fact

Did you know only 1 in 210 overweight men succeed in regaining and maintaining a healthy weight?

I didn’t either until Mrs T. told me a few weeks ago after she stumbled across a research paper that laid bare the stark reality of just how difficult it is to get into shape.

And it is difficult. I should know, I used to be extraordinarily fat. (Circa 17 stone at a height of a mere 5’ 7”. Yes, I know, I’m a manlet).

However, the main difficulty lies in maintaining the lean, healthy physique you’ve worked so hard to attain.

To use my own experience as an example, I actually lost a lot of weight very quickly when I first started training. However, my results were fleeting. Soon enough, the weight came back. And whilst I was never again quite as fat as I was in the beginning, I still hated what I saw in the mirror.

The gut… love handles… moobs… you get the idea.

As the years went by, the cycle repeated. I’d lose weight, then “life” would happen and I’d put most of it back on again.

So what changed?

Three things:

  1. I became a father. My daughter deserves a strong, lean, and most of all healthy dad who can meet her needs no matter what.
  2. I stopped chasing big numbers in the gym. Strength training is vital, but it’s impossible to maintain a lean physique and lift mind-bendingly heavy weights unless you’re on gear. (And taking gear is stupid).
  3. I finally bit the bullet and started doing regular cardio. Most guys who lift weights don’t do much or any cardio, and it shows. Unfortunately, you MUST do a mixture of steady-state and high intensity cardio if you want to get and stay lean.

These days, I don’t have any trouble staying in great shape year-round. Moreover, my blood pressure and resting heart rate have both come down dramatically which indicates my cardiovascular health has improved… and… I no longer suffer from any joint pain whatsoever.

Please don’t take this as a boast. Believe me, I  made a lot of mistakes along the way (and I still do because nobody’s perfect).

The reason I’m telling you this is to show you it is possible to lose fat and keep it off – so long as you’re prepared to check your ego and do a whole bunch of boring and uncomfortable work.

If that’s you then you MAY be a candidate for The Phil Tyreman Letter.
