We’ve just returned from three nights away at the glorious Butlin’s in Skegness.
I know, I know, I do spoil my family.
Anyway, it was a great trip and, much to my surprise, I’ve come home noticeably leaner than when I left – despite not going to the gym since early Monday morning.
I’m not saying this to brag. OK, maybe I am a little. But the main reason I’m mentioning it is that I know holidays are a real pain in the proverbial for men who take their training seriously.
And, in some cases, a week away can cause them to fall off the wagon entirely and undo whatever progress they’ve worked so hard to make.
Fortunately, there is a solution to this most vexing of problems and – better yet – it doesn’t involve sacrificing all the good stuff about holidays (rest, nice food, socialising, etc.).
The catch?
You’ve gotta exercise restraint.
For example, we opted to go “self-catered” to ensure most of our meals were of the healthy, nutritious, and home-cooked variety. (We did eat out, but only once and opted for a venue with an all-you-can-eat salad bar).
Similarly, I kept my alarm set for 04:15 so as not to mess with my body clock, but I didn’t go straight out for a walk/run as I ordinarily would. Instead, I enjoyed a quiet coffee with Jess before the kids woke up and did my cardio later in the day.
Little adjustments like these won’t take away from the enjoyment of your holiday. If anything, they’ll enhance your experience because you won’t spend most of the time feeling groggy and bloated.
The only exception is if you’re the sort of person who needs to get drunk, stuff yourself with garbage, and sleep ‘til noon to have a good time, in which case I suggest you grow up.
Anyway, nothing in this email is directly relevant to the content of February’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter because it’s all about building a strong, healthy back.
The back is arguably the most important part of your body to keep in tip-top condition, yet it’s chronically undertrained by most for various reasons. And if you’re one of those people who doesn’t give their back the attention it deserves you’ve a huge problem on your hands because one thing that’ll put an end to your ability to train hard enough to get results once and for all is a back injury, no doubt about it.
So, if you’re serious about training long-term (i.e. for a decade or more), you won’t want to miss the next issue.
