You probably don’t want to hear this

The proverb “honesty is the best policy” means it’s always better to tell a truth than a lie, no matter the consequences.

It’s a noble idea, but problems arise when being honest means saying things others really don’t want to hear.

Take my industry as an example.

Fitness coaches love to hand out “how to” tips. You’ve seen these before. They’re those saccharine posts that say things like:

“Do this to WIN in 2024:

* Lift weights 4x per week

* Do cardio 5x per week

* Cook healthy meals from scratch

* Get plenty of sunlight

* 8 hours of sleep per night

Stick at this for 6 months and you won’t recognise yourself!!1!”

There’s nothing technically wrong with the information in (most of) these posts, but the advice is still useless to the overwhelming majority of those who read it because it doesn’t address the root of the problems.

For instance, everyone with a triple-digit IQ and access to the internet knows they should cook healthy meals from scratch.

Most don’t, usually because they claim they “don’t have the time”.

But here’s the rub: They do have the time, they just prefer to spend it vegetating in front of a screen.

“But Phil, what about people with kids?”

Well, I’ve got two of them (1 and 3 years), and it’s never stopped me from preparing and cooking my and the kids’ meals without recourse to ready meals, jars, and takeaways.

So, really, the problem most men have is a lack of willingness to make sacrifices in order to do the things they need to do to get into shape and become the healthy role model their family deserves.

The irony of it all?

Those fitness coaches posting glib platitudes know all of this, they’re just too afraid to say it – to be honest – because they might upset someone with an ego the size of the moon.

Whatever.

I’ll always tell you the truth, even when I know it’ll make you uncomfortable because it’s in both of our interests for me to do so.

If I shy away from talking about the consequences of inaction – feeling ashamed of how you look, health problems, and, quite possibly, a premature demise –  you’ll never become a client, get great results, and tell all your friends about me.

And while we’re on the subject of you becoming my client, the deadline to subscribe in time to receive January’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter is soon upon us.

This issue explains, in some considerable detail, how to plan your training for the year, to ensure you end up in better shape at the end of 2024 than you are at the start.

Highlights include:

  • The three-step process I use to ensure I end every year stronger and in better shape than when I started (while going to the gym a lot less than most).
  • Why a lot of men are stuck spinning their wheels despite taking their training very seriously.
  • A quick (but deeply uncomfortable) way to find out exactly what you need to focus on right now to set yourself up for success.
  • How to know when it’s time to scrap your plan and change direction.
  • A special type of “easy” training you must do at least twice per year to prevent overtraining and burnout. (Don’t worry, you won’t lose all your gains when you train like this).
  • When and how to use rest weeks to get better results from your training.
  • The best types of training programmes for the “average guy” who simply wants nothing more than to be a strong, lean, and healthy role model for his family.

That’s just a partial summary. There’s more inside.

Plus, subscribers get some nifty bonus including (but not limited to) access to me via email if they need help writing their training programme, want their exercise form critiqued, or just have questions about training, diet, etc. that they’d like answered.

It’s £100 per month, which is £3.29 per day. (Very generous, given you get virtually unlimited access to me for help with anything I’m qualified to assist you with).
