“Isn’t walking every day enough for cardio, Phil?”
Asked a smart young man in response to a LinkedIn post I wrote where I said a man needs to do some sort of hard cardio like running in addition to walking every day without fail.
My response:
“It depends. But, typically no.”
The above even applies to people who regularly hit ten to fifteen thousand steps.
Why?
I shall mansplain:
While regular walking provides manifold and wonderful boons to your health (physical and mental), physique, and quality of life it’s not really “exercise”.
That the various authorities call it such is a worrying indication of just how far society has fallen.
Consider:
I live about two miles from the town centre. There’s a long, straight road that runs from my house to town proper and, in days gone by, you’d see a steady flow of people walking to and fro along it for work, shopping, socialising, and so on.
(Our neighbours who have lived in the town for over seventy years say there used to be little shops and even public loos at various points, such was the flow of foot traffic).
Four miles is about 8000 steps, which would take about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete at the average walking pace of 3 miles per hour. (FYI: 3mph is painfully slow, so it’d take considerably less time if you tried even a little bit).
Add in the incidental steps you do around your home and/or workplace, and you can see just how easy it is to hit your ten thousand steps.
And easy doesn’t build powerful physiques powered by hearts of iron and lungs of steel.
Which is what you want, if you’re serious about living a healthier, happier life and being more useful in general.
