“I wouldn’t call myself ‘active’ – not by your standards.”
Came a comment from a chap who I hold in very high regard.
His is an interesting point worth exploring.
Here is why:
There is a belief that getting strong and in shape requires a tremendous amount of work on a weekly basis.
It’s an incorrect belief, but I understand why it is held by many.
For instance, anyone who has even a passing familiarity with online fitness content will have seen drug-fuelled musclebros (and broettes) indulging in all manner of hardcore shenanigans while unthinkingly parroting such clichés as “train insane or stay the same”.
And while they almost certainly don’t want to look like these nuggets, the impression is left that extreme effort is required to produce meaningful results.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Actually, it takes very little work to get yourself into the top 20% or maybe even top 10% of people in terms of fitness.
How little?
* One walk every day without fail
* Two weightlifting sessions per week
* Two “hard” (air quotes ‘cuz it’s a relative term) cardio sessions per week
Obviously you have to set up your weightlifting and cardio sessions properly.
It will also be a Very Long Time (likely years) before you see results you are truly satisfied with.
But you cannot reasonably say that doing this is beyond anyone who is serious about looking and feeling better, and living a longer, healthier, happier life.
For specifics, consult my Very Expensive Books which are on sale for a righteous 50% off the regular price until tonight (24th) at 23:59.
