Many, many, many moons ago, I downloaded a PDF bench press programme I saw advertised via a banner ad on some dodgy website.
At the time, I was so eager to get my bench press up, believing a large bench press was the key to getting hawt girlz, I was willing to risk a devastating computer virus.
Fortunately, the PDF contained no malware.
The programme promised to add 20 lbs to my bench press in just 6 weeks.
It did not deliver.
Largely due to user error, I must add.
From what I remember, the method was sound. A simple basic bench press specialisation routine that contained all the needful ingredients to increase a man’s (or possibly woman’s) bench quickly.
Potentially by as much as 20 lbs or even more, for the right person, with the right attitude, at the right time in their training career.
And therein lies the problem with big, results-based promises, in my opinion.
They hang in the ether, gleaming like stars on a cloudless night tempting you to take a look.
And you look.
Then you dump whatever it is you’re doing because progress has been slower than you’d like to try one out.
Maybe you get some results, maybe you don’t but harm is done regardless.
How?
Disruption to your routine.
I shall mansplain:
Firstly, results slowing to a crawl is part and parcel of training. Provided what you are doing isn’t pants-on-head stupid, you just need to learn to deal with it and keep chipping away.
Secondly, you often experience your greatest training breakthroughs after a sustained period of being stuck in the mud. Breakthroughs you will deprive yourself of if you programme hop.
And thirdly, if the switch is significant enough, it can precipitate you falling off the wagon altogether as you struggle to adapt to the New Thing. So why expose yourself to that risk at all?
I cannot think of a reason.
Although I am sure some creepy reply-guy is tapping away a snarky response to “educate” me as fast as his degenerate little fingers can manage.
Enough of this.
Below is a link to my latest book:
“The Muscle and Strength Building Manual for the Natural Trainee: A straightforward guide for those who have made the bold decision to train without using steroids or other PEDs”
The title explains the contents.
It is available very inexpensively through Amazon.
But please only purchase it if you are prepared to put in a lot of work over an extended period of time.
Otherwise your £3.99 is better spent at Costa.
