My old email marketing provider offered a little free text box people could use to send me “feedback” when they unsubscribed from my list.
I kind of miss it actually, because it’s now much rarer for me to receive colourful insults for doing terrible things like asking people to read my sales pages to properly inform themselves about an offer before buying it.
No doubt some still feel this way, but without an easy way to vent their frustrations by announcing their departure as if I’m supposed to care about “losing” their custom, almost all of them disappear into the void, likely to go and haunt some other fitness coach with their entitled attitudes.
Anyway, another source of frustration among some of my subscribers is that they resent how “surface level” pretty much all of the material I fire out in these emails is. Doubly so as easily 90% of them include an invitation to purchase or otherwise enquire about one of my books, my print newsletter, a course, or whatever else I’ve cooked up.
On that, I have a few things to say:
* I have (some might say unwisely) made the decision to house, clothe, and feed my family by selling information and coaching to help serious people with a job, probably a family of their own, and certainly a suite of interests beyond fitness get strong and in shape. So obviously I have to relentlessly sell that information and coaching as I don’t fancy supplementing my income with an OnlyFriends as many in my industry are wont to do.
* It’s not possible to give specific advice to someone you have never spoken with for reasons anyone with two brain cells to rub together can figure out. However, if you’ve been with me for a while and have been paying attention, you will notice that I do answer questions that come in because I publish the best ones as emails (anonymised unless I am given explicit consent to do otherwise).
* Moreover, I respond to every email I get unless the question is egregiously stupid, phrased demandingly, or the asker is on my blacklist.
So what I am saying is, if you don’t think I am giving enough value, you are more than welcome to email me either directly or in response to one of these emails, and I’ll do what I can to help you out a bit.
You won’t get as much info as I give my paying clients because I am not in the habit of kicking them in the teeth (not that I could give you as much as them even if I wanted to because with familiarity comes detail), and I certainly don’t want a pen pal – but ask politely and I am sure I will be able to give you a pearl of wisdom or two.
Another place you will find many, many pearls is the April 2025 issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter, which is currently for sale as I endeavour to pare down the mountain of cardboard boxes in my bedroom where I store my overprints.
It’s tied with the October 2024 issue for being the most important I have ever written, and it’s the longest so far clocking in at 32 A4 pages and well over 10,000 words.
Here’s a look at what’s inside:
* What I believe is the best style of lifting regime for those who are lacking in the cardiovascular department (and how not training in this way made doing meaningful cardio impossible for me, even when I had a job when I was literally paid to use a treadmill).
* Wisdom from indomitable strength coach, Dan John, that, when correctly applied, will make basically any workout more effective – and shorter.
* Nine figures of legend from the “Silver Era” of bodybuilding everyone who is serious about training would do well to study.
* The proper way to use weightlifting machines for maximum gains in muscle and strength.
* A brief history lesson proving most lifters (and, alas, many coaches) are misusing bands, chains, and other powerlifting accoutrements.
* Four dire consequences associated with chasing strength at the expense of everything else (rarely a week goes by when I don’t see an earnest and hardworking person struggling with at least one of these).
* How to get your wife or girlfriend or husband or boyfriend (and kids, if you have them) into training.
