Two ways to get out of a training rut

Something I’ve observed is how earnest, hardworking men who train consistently find themselves spinning their wheels for months, sometimes years at a time.

By that I mean, they make little or no progress despite training very hard indeed. (Certainly a lot harder than people who get their results from chemical “help”).

This alone is a vexing problem.

But it gets worse…

Because, the chances are, they’re actually moving backwards.

Injuries mount. Motivation fades. Sessions skipped.

Hence, hard-won results are lost.

It’s enough to make a lot of guys quit altogether.

Understandably so. After all, if you’re not getting the results you want within a reasonable timeframe, what’s the point in spending upwards of a dozen hours a week training on top of sacrificing late nights, meals out, and so on?

Ultimately, if you find yourself stuck in a training rut you’ve got a couple of options:

1) Push on through regardless.

This is what I did when I made basically no progress between 2012 and 2015. It works best when your lifestyle accommodates it (I was single, broke, and living alone with no friends so training was my only viable hobby), and even then it’s gruelling so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Or,

2) Get advice and support from an appropriately qualified professional.

The better option, in my biased opinion. Building muscle and strength naturally isn’t at all easy once you’ve nabbed your “beginner gains”. To the point that doing so consistently and sustainably for years – potentially decades – without outside help is basically impossible unless it’s your job.

I’m not saying the activities themselves are as burdensome as a job, I’m specifically referring to the extreme effort involved in finding the right information, analysing it, and then figuring out how to apply it to your situation.

You are, of course, welcome to try and get yourself unstuck.
