Two underrated exercises for slapping muscle on ye olde frame

Are the following:

1) The Dumbbell Pullover

Once upon a time a popular movement beloved by bodybuilders for its supposed ability to “expand the rib cage”.

Whether this is true I cannot say. However, you cannot deny the bodybuilders of the 40s and 50s possessed a certain broadness to their upper bodies despite carrying significantly less muscle than the juiced-up ninja turtles that are the bodybuilders of today.

My experience is similar in that I’ve a very “weak” chest yet I’m still very broad, and I credit this to including pullovers in my training for at least a few months every year.

2) Dumbbell Lateral Raises

You might argue these are not underrated because they are very popular.

I’d counter that by saying most people do them wrong, so the “true” form of this exercise is, in fact, underrated.

I shall mansplain:

The overwhelming majority go too heavy using awful form (typically butt tilted back, neck flexed, with a strained expression similar to the one you see when someone is straining for a poo).

Whereas you ought to go light – very light – to enable you to keep the tension in your shoulders where it should be throughout a *full* range of motion.

How light is light?

Enough to do sets of 15 to 30 reps. Yes, I said sets of 30 reps.

Used judiciously, ultra-high rep sets can result in you slapping a ridiculous amount of muscle on extremely quickly.

Occasionally so fast others accuse you of partaking of the naughty juice.

I’m not saying that will happen for you, but it should give you some idea of what’s possible.

Anyway.

I’ve re-opened my diary for private calls.

There is a fee.

When you book, you’ll get an hour to talk with me about whatever you like training-wise.

Be aware that it’s only an hour’s call, so please only bring ONE problem you’d like me to help you solve.
