The oldest excuse in the book

“I don’t have the time to exercise” is perhaps the most common excuse I hear from people who are out of shape when challenged on their choices.

The truth?

Very rare is it for someone to genuinely have no time to do any exercise whatsoever.

I’m sure this applies to someone, somewhere – but I have not met him in all my thirty-three years on God’s green Earth.

What people actually mean when they say this is perhaps best summed up by my now client (an intelligent, hardworking man if ever there was).

Paraphrasing:

===

“There’s always something I’d rather do – a book to read, a show to watch – and it means I struggle to stick to an exercise programme for any great length of time”.

===

The point?

In every circumstance I have hitherto encountered, a person’s priorities determine whether or not they train with discipline and intent.

It’s harder for some than others, that’s a given.

But to claim they can’t lift a finger?

Nah, not buying it.

However.

I will concede that it can *feel* impossible when you’re being pulled from pillar to post working long, perhaps irregular, hours while trying to find time for your family and indulge in interests unrelated to the gym.

It certainly felt that way for me, at times (and I didn’t have a family or even friends back when I was working rotas that obeyed the letter but perhaps not the spirit of the EU Working Time Directive).

Yet find a way you must, if you are serious about being the man those who depend on you deserve – not to mention avoiding the terrible medical consequences of not training which I shan’t go into here for fear of pushing the knife in so far it comes out the other side.

(But I will mention training correctly is even more important for the health and wellbeing of men who carry a lot of stress from work).

Anyway.

If you’d like not just “a way” but a complete methodology for getting strong and in shape based on my extensive experience of training through the operational stresses and inhumane shift patterns of an ambulance paramedic – you will find it in my book “Shift”.
