Below is what I wanted to include as a P.S. to July’s issue of “The Phil Tyreman Letter” but couldn’t because I ran out of space:
===
“P.S. Come to think of it, I do have something to say before I depart.
I wanted to tell you that Jess has recently started a new full time employed job this month which involves a lengthy commute to an office in some post-industrial town (the name of which escapes me).
Needless to say, I am very proud of her for putting herself back out there for the first time since having our first child. But I’m even more proud of her for how she has seamlessly adapted her fitness routine to accommodate the long hours.
Suffice it to say, she’s gotta be fit to serve me, our kids, and her employer to the very best of her ability – and she didn’t miss a beat.
I know, I am married to one special lady.”
===
On the face of it, a bunch of soppy codswallop that’s of no benefit to you whatsoever.
But when the smart man peers a little closer, he will find lessons aplenty.
Like, for example, Jess’ profound understanding that it is impossible to reach your potential as a spouse, parent, and worker without being strong and in shape.
Certainly a minority view these days, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
Then there’s how she adapted her training to suit her new commitments, instead of using her inability to carry on as before as an excuse to stop altogether.
In Jess’ case, this involved shuffling her training around a little bit without making any changes to her workouts. Not that it would have been a problem had she needed to switch things up a little, given the cornucopia of options for keeping her progress going at a steady, sustainable clip.
One of those options being to substitute some of her weightlifting exercises with bodyweight movements.
A fine solution for the man (or woman) who finds themselves up against it due to circumstances beyond their control because of how easy it is to get a fair chunk of volume in very quickly. (Because you generally don’t have to rest as long between sets nor do you have to wait around for equipment to become available).
And would you believe it, I’ve explained precisely how to seamlessly integrate bodyweight work to supplement your resistance training to spur new gains in muscle and strength while potentially making your workouts much shorter.
