If you’re stuck spinning your wheels in the gym, this email might explain why.
Go to any gym, and you’ll see far more people using dumbbells, machines, and cables than you will hoiking around barbells.
Granted, that’s because there are invariably fewer barbells than there are all that other stuff combined. But I’m happy to go out on a limb and say only a small minority of the average gym population do any serious barbell training.
Given this, it’s no coincidence that the balance of men you’ll see in the gym week in, week out don’t look like they train.
Why?
Dumbbell, machine, cable, and, yes, even bodyweight exercises are in and of themselves insufficient to get you the body you wanted when you started training.
The details are fairly complicated, but it boils down to you not being able to lift heavy, frequently, and safely enough to build the strength that mostly drives muscle growth.
None of this is to say that these exercises have no place in your training whatsoever.
You’re pretty foolish if you exclude them, actually.
You simply need to learn why, when, and how to incorporate these manifold and wonderful exercises into your training for maximum muscle.
