Client of mine at the personal training gym I briefly owned back in 2017 came to me having been ensnared by a mobility twonk.
Basically, what had happened was this quack had convinced my client that he had a bunch of serious musculoskeletal issues that he did not have, and proposed a Very Expensive course of “treatment” to solve a suite of problems that did not exist.
However.
My people are and always have been smart people.
So he asked me for a second opinion before committing.
One of the ways mobility twonks “assess” their “patients” is to have them perform an overhead squat, either with a bar or broomstick or simply with hands outstretched.
Now, the overhead squat is a very technical movement. Easily within the top five most tricky, and, in my opinion, a strong contender for a slot in the top three.
So obviously having the average person or even someone who has done some weightlifting but not practiced this movement specifically will result in a car crash of epic proportions.
Hips wobble, spine rounds, knees collapse, torso twists, shoulders shake, elbows buckle.
Not a pretty sight.
But also not diagnostic of any serious muscular imbalances, injuries, or mobility problems.
As I proved in this instance by spending about five minutes coaching my client on how to correctly execute an overhead squat, which he then completed easily to respectable depth with no major malfunctions whatsoever.
He did not go on to purchase the services of Mr Mobility Twonk.
Why am I telling you this?
I am a simple man who preaches simple methods that have been shown time and time again to work over a great many decades.
They are not flashy and they are certainly not pseudo-medical (i.e. quackary).
Some have even said they are very boring.
But they get the job done, and in a way that is sustainable meaning you can, if you wish, continue to make steady progress for a great many years with little fuss or hassle compared to more aggressive methods.
You will find them, tailored to specific scenarios, in my Very Expensive Books which are on sale for 50% off the regular price until 23:59 on Christmas Eve.
