Is training just once weekly “enough”?

Behold a question from a reader (asked me to keep him anon):

===

“I’ve kind of resigned myself to a steady state of one session a week, solid full body. And on hard run a week. Is that going to be enough?”

===

Response:

One is better than none.

Moreover, it’s better to do one session of each properly and consistently than try for more than that and fall off ye olde wagon.

You just have to accept that your progress will be painfully slow.

You will also encounter lengthy plateaus very frequently because your training will lack the volume, frequency, and depth needed to prevent them from occurring or swiftly break them when they do happen.

But you will still make some progress.

Potentially far more progress than the “gym magpies” who cannot help themselves but pursue a new shiny object every week when measured on a decades-long scale.

Whatever the case.

I would never “recommend” just one weekly session each of lifting and cardio, as I think even the busiest among us can (and therefore should) make the time for at least two. But on the other hand, I’m also never going to tell someone “not” to do it either, if they truly believe that’s all they can manage because a programme you believe in will always outperform an “optimal” one you’re less than convinced about for reasons too esoteric to expound upon here.

Anyway.

Them’s my thoughts on the matter.
