How I go about designing training programmes

Something I am not is a purveyor of “paint by numbers” exercise routines.

I’d probably make a truckload more cash if I was because I know that’s what most people want.

But, alas, I have instead opted to laser in on teaching how to construct sensible programmes from the ground up, because having the confidence and competence to do that is the only way to get truly sustainable results (i.e. results you can easily keep and use as a springboard to ever greater things).

On that note, here is roughly the process I use to construct something new:

1) Determine what exactly it is I want to achieve and, most importantly, WHY I want to achieve it (safeguards against ego-driven desires that are invariably counterproductive).

2) Consider what else I have going on unrelated to training to prevent me biting off more than I can chew in terms of frequency, difficulty, etc.

3) Pick what days I will train.

3) Build a resistance regime that has all the core movement patterns in balance with one another (squat, vertical press, horizontal press, hinge, vertical pull, horizontal pull), supplemented with little movements for abs, arms, and calves as required.

4) Decide what and how much “hard” (a relative term) cardio I will do.

5) Plug the above two things into my week on the days I have marked as “training days”

6) Get on with it.

It’s a simple process but I daresay it is an effective one, and I have used it since forever to create everything from powerlifting-style programmes with the sole aim slapping more plates on the bar to my “Bodyweight Buccaneer” system I’ve recently been using to toughen up a bit (and drop some unsightly body fat while I’m at it).

Anyway, given we’re coming up on the time of year when training regimes go down the lavatory due to holidays, weddings, and whatnot, I’d argue that now is the best time to get this way of thinking embedded, so you can get to the other side of summer with your results intact. (And maybe even make some brand new progress if the stars align.)

“The Training Survival Guide”

This is a short digital book that is usually only available as an upsell on some of my other offers, but I’ve decided to make it available for standalone purchase until Friday the 13th at 23:59.

It’s only available to those who live in the UK, so if you are not a UK resident, you are not allowed to buy it (blame your government for their burdensome tax regulations, not me).

Those who are eligible to purchase it will see that unlike most of my books, this is very inexpensive at a mere £20 – a sum I am confident anyone in gainful employment can afford.

P.S. Apologies for the obnoxious countdown timer at the checkout. Including it is the only way I know how to make sure the cart closes at the deadline.
