Behold some scribblings I made in my “Outdoor Fitness: Goole” Facebook group that I run with Jess:
===
If you are a parent who is interested in their child(ren) living a long, happy, and healthy life you’d do well to pay attention to this post:
My eldest two are five and two years old.
Both WANT to exercise daily (the older one badgers me incessantly to supervise her exercises first thing in the morning and the younger copies as best he can, getting Very Upset Indeed if he is left out).
I am sure some will hate me for saying this, but there really is no “secret”.
Literally all you have to do is show them what a healthy (i.e. non-obsessive) relationship with exercise looks like, and they will follow suit.
This is far and away more effective than telling them that exercise is important while lounging around on the sofa in a soiled tracksuit with your phone in your hand.
Same applies to diet as well, by the way.
Obviously to show them the way you have to actually train with discipline and without complaint, which, if my observations at the school gates are anything to go by, is more than most can muster.
===
It’s a pretty harsh message, that is for sure. It needs to be as Facebook groups (particularly local groups) devolve into utter cesspits if you don’t clean the dregs from time to time.
Nevertheless, it is probably the most important message I have to share.
More:
If you are interested in “showing” rather than “telling”, arguably the quickest and easiest way to start is by running a bodyweight-based training programme. Because when you train at or close to home (perhaps in your local park, for example) training ceases to be this abstract thing you do in a place they are not allowed.
Likewise if you possess a wife, girlfriend, husband, or boyfriend who you want to get into training, bodyweight-based programmes remove all the time, cost, and intimidation barriers associated with going to the gym.
Anyway.
I’m banging on about this because I am currently recruiting a merry crew of Bodyweight Buccaneers to join me for a private (i.e. one to one because I am not fond of this “group coaching” lark) ten-week programme.
