Fitness lessons from beyond the grave

My most enduring memory of my late grandfather is doing pushups and situps with him in the grand reception room of his mansion.

This was sometime in the mid 90s which, if I remember rightly, meant he was around 65 years old.

Yet despite advancing age, he took a workout consisting of a few miles’ run followed immediately by the aforementioned pushups and situps most days. A habit he continued until he was struck with a form of cancer that, to quote the man himself, “is so rare I shouldn’t have it”. (He eventually died of the disease).

Why am I telling you this?

A couple of reasons.

Firstly, to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s possible to stay in great shape using even the simplest methods.

And secondly, to demonstrate the profound impact your training can have on those who matter most to you.

I shall explain:

I’m incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to train with my grandad. He set a great example to five year old Phil, and I doubt very much I’d have gotten as fat as I did as a teenager had he still been around.

Moreover, now that I am a father myself, the idea that I can not only inspire my kids but my kids’ kids is quite the motivator.

Something to think about.

And something else to think about is subscribing to The Phil Tyreman Letter – if you want to build muscle and strength naturally.
