Lately, I have been working my way through a book called, “The Diary of a U-boat Commander” by a chap called Sir Stephen King Hall.
It is the personal diary of Karl von Schenk, a submarine officer (and later commander) during the first world war, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this sort of thing. (The book is free to read at Project Gutenberg, just plonk the title into Google and it should be among the first few results.)
And the relevance?
Schenk talks a little about his workout regime which is robust and flexible enough for him to perform on the conning tower of his submarine in the middle of the Atlantic. Specifically, he uses turn of the 20th Century strongman J P Muller’s inventively titled “My System” – short, sharp, full body, bodyweight routines that can be completed in half an hour or less.
The philosophy undergirding Muller’s work heavily influenced my current training regime that I created when I decided I’d had enough of breathing in other’s sweat and being an unwilling extra in thirst trap content a lot of young women have taken to filming at the gym.
I cannot say I am anything other than delighted about not having to trek to the gym any more.
And not just because of the results I am enjoying (the only time I have ever lost fat as quickly as this was when I did a stupid diet that nearly blinded me in one eye, yet with this I am not paying much attention to what I’m eating at all beyond doing the obvious like avoiding stuff I know is bad for me).
The boost to my mental wellbeing from spending a lot of time outside in the fresh air surrounded by nature has been remarkable. Then there is how I am able to “normalise” exercise to Connie and Marcus by taking them with me to the park while I train (Jess minds them), and they are generally more interested in joining in than they are in playing on the swings or whatever.
Speaking of my new system of training, all is revealed June’s issue of The Phil Tyreman Letter.
So if you want to learn it, you’d better skedaddle to the sales page and get yourself subscribed before Saturday’s deadline (31/05).
However.
While there is some urgency (all of my deadlines are real deadlines), there is still plenty of time to properly read all of the information on both the sales and terms and conditions pages to make sure whatever decision you make is a properly informed one.
Don’t want to make an informed decision because you are too lazy to read the info?
I don’t want you as a subscriber.
