Everyone’s drinking from Johnny Juicehead’s bathtub

“People who are leaner, bigger, or stronger than you aren’t always on steroids. They just train harder and pay better attention to their diet.”

If I had a pound for every time I’d heard someone say this in real life or seen it posted on social media, I’d have enough to fund a comfortable retirement in a second-world country.

And while it’s true that not every guy who is in better shape than you is on the sauce,  a lot of them are, and I can prove it.

Take, for example, the 2019 study, Prevalence and profile of users and non-users of anabolic steroids among resistance training practitioners published in the journal, BMC Public Health. (I’m not going to link it here because putting too many links in emails can plonk me straight into your junk folder, so if you want the link hit reply and I’ll send it over).

That study of 5773 people found:

  • 9.1% of them had used gear in the past.
  • 3.4% currently use. And,
  • 4.3% intend to use in the future.

Altogether, that’s 12.6% – a little over one in ten, although the true figure is probably higher.

Why do I say that?

Well, possession of PEDs is illegal in the country where the study took place (Brazil). And I don’t know about you, but if I was trafficking in illegal substances, I wouldn’t admit it in a survey.

This leads me to the point of this email, which is to tell you that a lot of the people you look up to in the fitness realm are probably drinking from Johnny Juicehead’s bathtub. If not right now, then at some point in the past.

To be clear: I don’t think this makes them bad people. Nor do I have a problem with them refusing to admit it publicly. (Remember, PEDs are illegal in many countries – and even where personal use is legal, if they admitted it they’d probably lose the sponsorship deals they need to keep themselves fed and housed).

However, I do think you should be aware that a lot of what you see hasn’t been achieved naturally, and manage your expectations accordingly.

Now all that’s left to do is remind you that if you want to build a powerful physique without back-breaking workouts, following a stupid diet – and certainly without abusing dangerous illicit substances, The Phil Tyreman Letter will show you how.

P.S. Please don’t subscribe if you are taking or considering taking PEDs.

I stand by what I said in that I don’t think it makes you a bad person, but I do think it’s stupid and I’ve no interest in helping you into an early grave – something I would be doing because staying silent on the issue is a form of endorsement. To that end, I have a strict “no drugs policy”. This means if it comes to my attention that a client is partaking in the use of any PED (AAS, SARMS, GH, etc.), I’ll terminate our contract and blacklist them immediately. No exceptions.
