Below is an extract from a book I am writing (a strength and conditioning manual for martial artists):
===
“The real “secret” to sustained and sustainable results is to daisy chain as many decent sessions together as humanly possible, taking PLANNED deloads (lighter periods of training) and rest weeks (time off the gym) to manage the fatigue that’s part and parcel of proper training.
Things go Very Wrong Indeed when you push too hard (which includes training too much on a busy schedule) and are forced to take UNPLANNED deloads and time off the gym (single sessions or entire weeks, both are equally as pernicious).
As cliché as it sounds, this really is a “Tortoise and the Hare” situation.
Whether or not you take this advice ultimately boils down to your ability to keep your ego and desire for fast results in check.
Alas, most can’t – and I mean no disrespect in saying so.
People who train are almost without exception diligent and hardworking individuals. And it’s these traits that, when left unchecked, lead to their downfall.”
===
The above applies to people who train generally, not just martial artists.
Appropriately, if you would like to learn how to write training programmes that deliver sustained and sustainable results, get yourself booked into my cleverly titled live, online seminar:
“How to Write a Training Programme”
The talk is at 1900 on Wednesday the 16th of October.
This is for UK residents only.
To make sure I don’t fall foul of the international taxmen, I am going to ask for your address at the checkout.
Any purchases from outside of the UK will be immediately refunded and the offender blacklisted for failing to comply with very simple instructions.
I may or may not run this event again, and it will not be recorded.
