About that time I hid in a bush

Running and I have never been happy bedfellows.

For example, when I was 11, our year group did a running programme as part of some national initiative.

We were split into three groups – Blue, Green, and Yellow – depending on our fitness levels with “Blue” being for the fittest and “Yellow” the fattest.

No prizes for guessing to which group Yours Baldly was assigned.

The first week, us porkers on team Yellow were assigned a mere five minute run after an appropriate warm up.

I did not finish.

Fast forward a few years to the renowned “Sewage Farm Run” – a fairly mild cross country run and a school tradition everybody did once (and once only).

Except me.

Because I hid in a bush only to emerge after most of my classmates had returned so as not to arouse suspicion.

Truly, a masterstroke of subterfuge.

Anyway.

I continued to not do cardio throughout my teens and well into adulthood.

Even after I started lifting weights, cardio – or conditioning – was something I did rarely, inconsistently, and with barely a fraction of the effort I put into picking things up and putting them down.

In my 20s, I largely got away with it.

Kinda.

I shall explain:

Getting lean required me to do pants-on-head stupid diets that I couldn’t maintain and, in one case, left me malnourished to the point my blood stopped clotting properly.

The rest of the time I wasn’t fat per se, but I certainly wasn’t happy with my body.

Oh sure, I looked good in a T-Shirt, but I wasn’t comfortable without one and avoided relevant activities as a result. (On one occasion refusing to go swimming with my then-pregnant wife leaving her to wrangle our incredible and ever-so-energetic toddler while I sulked in the cafe).

This only changed when I finally sacked up and started running regularly.

A habit I continue in until this day and one that has enabled me to stay almost as lean as I’d get on those stupid diets without really thinking about food at all.

The reason I’m telling you all this is that the exact programme I used to go from not running at all to running respectable distances multiple times per week is featured in my short and ugly book “The Conditioning Codex” which is on sale for a significant discount today only.
