Diet is not something I talk about often.
Firstly and most importantly because I am not qualified to give definitive, specific diet advice (no personal trainer is unless they also happen to be a HCPC registered dietitian, irrespective of how many certificates they have paid for).
And secondly because the entire topic bores me to tears.
Yet despite saying over and over again that I am NOT the guy to listen to about diet, people keep asking me for my opinion, so here it is:
* Any sane and sensible diet will “work”,
* But not all sane and sensible diets will “work” for you,
* Example: I used to be Very Fat and, like many who have or had that problem, struggle greatly with snacking,
* This means standard diets (think: chicken/rice, oatmeal, etc.) don’t work well for me because not only am I terrible at controlling my portions but I also find carby meals “prime” me to snack between meals,
* So I veer towards high fat/high protein diets, eating very few carbs aside from top-ups on Wednesdays and Saturdays,
* I find this stops me from snacking between meals altogether (in fact, I often have to force myself to eat lunch because I’m not really hungry come midday; but I eat anyway because if I don’t, I’ll invariably snack on garbage before dinner),
* However, I am NEVER militant about it – if I want to go out with Jess to eat something “off plan” or whatever and it’s not a Saturday or a Wednesday, I will still go and eat it,
* The big downside of my way of eating is that performance in the gym IS effected,
* Not terribly, but I have absolutely noticed a difference verses when I eat a more “conventional” high(er) carb diet,
* This doesn’t bother me because I’m no longer interested in pursuing peak performance, only leanness and health,
* Speaking of health, there are risks associated with high fat/high protein diets such as the one I follow,
* But then there are also risks associated with being fat,
* So you have to make a judgement call,
* And, no matter what, any diet philosophy you follow must involve the consumption of plenty of fruits and vegetables,
* If it doesn’t, you’re chasing short term weight/fat loss that you almost certainly won’t sustain, and you are also opening yourself up to all sorts of nasty maladies,
* Trust me, I very nearly lost my eyesight in one eye as a result of a nutrient deficiency brought about by following one of those aforementioned pants-on-head stupid fruit and veggie-free diets.
That just about sums up my thinking on the subject.
It’s about the only thing you won’t get MORE help from me with if you opt to become a client.
But the assistance I offer with every other aspect of training can only be described as “comprehensive”.
To illustrate the point, as a member of Phil’s Gym, you will get:
* Two “drop in” calls per week, every week for immediate assistance with your training, to learn from what others are doing, etc.,
* Access to an archive of almost everything I have written on the subject of training (minus my books) and hours of audio that I am adding to all the time,
* Personal access to me via your choice of text, email, and voice note for prompt guidance, form checks, moral support, accountability, and any other help I am qualified to give,
* My (in)famous Monday Message email for a proactive weekly check-in,
* A Real Paper copy of my obnoxiously titled monthly newsletter, The Phil Tyreman Letter, containing strategies, methods, and complete programmes you can follow “as is” or modify (with my help, if you wish) to suit your needs and aspirations… and…
* Exclusive “member only” bonuses including books, programmes, and audio trainings that normally cost far more than the monthly subscription… if they are available to the “general public” at all!
You can access all of the features using a neat little smartphone app (aside from the Real Paper Newsletter because… erm… it’s on paper). Don’t worry if you are technophobic because Jess will walk you through how to use it on your onboarding call.
A membership is £120/month (£4 per day by my maths) and you’re not locked into a contract, meaning you can cancel any time for any reason or no reason. You don’t even need to tell me you are cancelling because you can manage your subscription from your own private dashboard (again, Jess will show you all of this).
Oh, and if you join and decide it’s shyte, provided you cancel within the first 30 days, I’ll hand you your money back immediately and without question or challenge.
And, as of this sending, you may claim half off your first month by using the code GYM (enter it where it says “have coupon code”).
That code will remain active until I decide to turn it off, so if you are interested, I’d get to joining sooner rather than later if I were you.
