Fitness lessons from prison

One of my biggest influences (perhaps THE biggest) is the late, great Gary Halbert.

He was not an athlete or a bodybuilder or someone who has much of anything to do with the fitness industry (beyond writing a number of wildly successful fitness and supplement ads for various clients).

Rather, he was a copywriter. Arguably one of the greatest to have ever lived. And while I’d be lying if I said his marketing teachings hadn’t been wildly profitable for me over the years, I’ve most benefitted from the various “life” teachings of his that I’ve gleaned from editions of his print newsletter (a raft of which are available, for free, on his website) and one of his books (also free on his site, I believe) “The Boron Letters”.

That book consists of a series of letters he wrote to his son, Bond, while locked up in federal prison for mail fraud. Curiously, there is a fair crop of fitness advice in some of the letters, with one idea from the very first becoming a staple of my daily routine.

That idea?

Road work.

Specifically, heading out early (I tend to head out between 0500 and 0600) to walk, jog, or run for half an hour then turn around and come home. (Pretty generally I run out and walk back but sometimes, when I am feeling adventurous, I do it the other way around! Truly, my life is one of boundless excitement).

Honestly, if it wasn’t for Halbert’s Boron Letters, I probably wouldn’t have gotten into the habit and I certainly wouldn’t be as lean and generally healthy as I am these days. Nor would I possess a five year old daughter who loves nothing more than joining her grumpy ol’ dad for some early morning fresh air and honest exercise.

I wouldn’t have written the series of letters I wrote to her in January 2024 that I have bound into a book and put on sale for a mighty discount until 23:59 tonight (9th), either.

Speaking of which, if you want to take advantage of this noble sale and get “The Constance Chronicles” for an order of magnitude less than the regular price, here is what to do now:

1. Visit the below URL and read all the information carefully (i.e make an informed purchase). There’s a fair bit to go through, so take your time.

2. Use the code SALMON at the secure checkout (where it says “have coupon code?”).

3. Check the price changes.

4. Proceed with your purchase.

5. Wait for Royal Mail to deliver the knowledge unto you.

But don’t dither, ‘cuz once the clock strikes midnight the code will cease to work and you will have missed out.
