The “easy” way to get kids into running

Lately, Connie has taken to joining me on a lot of my early morning walks.

It all started about a week ago when I asked if she wanted to come along, as she’s now old enough to hold a sensible conversation and keep up.

She agreed, and off we went on my usual loop through the pitch black fields, along the main road, and back through row after row of Victorian terraces (that could be fairly described as “slumlike”).

Considering that she is five, my daughter was doing shockingly well. So well, in fact, that about halfway round I asked her if she would like to run the remaining distance home. Again, she enthusiastically agreed (I never convince, cajole, or coerce her into exercising) and ran the whole way at a solid pace without complaint.

Next day, I came downstairs to her dressed in her sports kit demanding to join me once again. I figured, “why not?” and once again we ventured out into the dark.

Only this time I decided to up the ante and, after a quick warm up, we started running straight away.

Connie managed a whole entire mile at a consistent, challenging pace, conquering an undulating route with some vicious inclines.

Suffice it to say, I was (am) Very Proud Indeed

Anyway, while we were running I got to thinking about how many of her classmates or, indeed, any school aged children would get the chance to go for a run with their dad (or mum) this week.

My money is on “not many, if any”, which is very sad for all sorts of reasons in my humbly accurate opinion.

Onward.

Apart from bragging, the reason I am bringing this up is that daily walks (and walk/runs) are a staple feature of the training methodology described in “The Constance Chronicles” which is on sale for a generous discount until Sunday the 9th.

It’s my consistent application of this approach that resulted in me earning a little running companion to enjoy talking with and seeing become fitter, stronger, and healthier on an almost weekly basis (and I will probably earn a couple more as my remaining progeny come of age).

Well worth heading out into the dark and cold, I think.
