Short letter to young Phil
Behold some tidbits of advice that, had my younger self had access to, would have negated much stress and hassle:
* Stop pretending your BMI is hovering around 30 “because of muscle”. You are fat. Do something about it before you worry about anything else.
* Bodyweight training isn’t ghey, you only think it is because you suck at it. However, if you get good at doing stuff like air squats and pushups BEFORE you start piling weight onto the barbell, you probably won’t get a back and hammie injury that gimps the productivity of your training for four years.
* A quality weighted vest is the best piece of home workout equipment money can buy.
* Go for a walk every day without fail.
* Being unable to run 5 km is nothing to be proud about.
* Nobody beyond basement-dwelling “powerlifters” on the internet cares about how much you can squat.
* Steroid abuse is more rampant than you think it is, meaning many of the people who are “on” look like hot garbage.
* The day that £10 weightlifting belt you got from Argos breaks is the day your back starts getting better.
* If you do those 225kg decline bench press lockouts you’re thinking about trying, everyone in your general vicinity will (rightly) think you are a loser.
* You’re onto a good thing by leaving your phone at home when you train. Keep doing that.
* Make the most of your independent warehouse gym while you still can because pretty soon it’ll be plagued by fitness dimfluencers and OnlyFriends “models” who will make you an unpaid extra in their content.
* Higher rep sets will do more for your strength, performance, appearance, and general health than grinding away at sets of three to five ever will.
* You’ll make more progress, faster if you just purchase information products (books, newsletters, etc.) by people you respect instead of trying to piece together programmes using whatever scraps of free information of theirs you can find online.
And in the spirit of that last point, you can pick up a digital copy of “Phil Tyreman’s Big Book of Fitness” (actually a collection of five of my books) for a mere £5.
There’s plenty enough inside to keep you occupied and moving forward for months and potentially years if you gel with my methods.
