Difference between a “plan” and a “programme”

If you’ve ever found yourself going through the motions in the gym, I’d hazard a major cause of that is the absence of a coherent plan.

Take note:

I said “plan” not “programme”.

In my experience, most are following or at least trying to follow some sort of programme. It might be rudimentary, it might not make much sense, but it is still better than doing whatever comes to mind on random days.

What is often lacking, however, is a coherent plan. A strategy where the gains made in one programme act as a springboard to facilitate even greater progress in the next.

Here’s what I mean:

Let’s say you want to look considerably better than you do presently by this time next year.

In this case, I’d generally recommend the following:

* Build a solid base of “general physical preparedness” through a lot of running and bodyweight workouts (with or without a weighted vest) to drop some weight, toughen up the joints, and improve the quality of fundamental movement patterns,

* Transition into a basic weightlifting programme consisting of squats, presses, and pulls, supplemented by a little pump work for arms, abs, and calves to get your strength up, and finally,

* Adapt the weightlifting work to shift the focus from strength to muscle growth placing special emphasis on your weak points for a healthy, vital, and balanced look.

The length of the phases will depend on your personal strengths and weaknesses. (Hint: If you are very fat, you’d do well to spend more time working on general physical preparedness, whereas if you are skinny time is best invested into training for strength or muscularity if you are weak or strong respectively.)

And so we arrive at the pitch:

If you’ve got a specific goal in mind you would like to train for, but you are feeling a bit lost about how to get there, I recommend you purchase a:

“Private Planning Session and Personal Report”

In short, we will talk then I will go away and write you a complete plan to cover the next twelve months (I will send you both a digital version and a physical copy).
