Why I don’t bother with core-only workouts

The astute gentleman from a couple of days ago who asked me a two stellar questions after reading my book returns:

===

“Insightful answers as always, my friend, a thousand thanks!

One small follow up to the micro workouts question — I noticed that you didn’t include any focusing solely (or as much as possible) on the core. Why is that the case?”

===

Answer:

I’ve never seen the point in workouts that solely focus on the core because the various component muscles are activated isometrically in every single movement of consequence (whether performed with free weights, machines, or bodyweight).

It’s not that there’s anything “wrong” with core-only workouts per se. More that they deliver insufficient bang for your buck when you have limited reserves of time and energy to spend on training, which is the case for most people (whether they are prepared to admit it or not).

Contrast the results of additional core work (which will be negligible given leanness is the primary determiner of how your abs look) with, say, the impact larger shoulders will have on your V-Taper or bigger quads will have on how you look in shorts or more shapely glutes will have on your ability to attain the secks.

Thank you,

P.S. The book has, I think, one review so if you’re worried about wasting money on a book you may find naff, I recommend you don’t buy it.

But if you do buy it, I’d appreciate it if you’d help me solve my little “review problem” by leaving your honest thoughts or just your honest star rating.
