Fitness teaching from space

“Battlestar Galactica” (2004) is arguably the best television series of all time.

For the uninitiated, it follows the journey through space of some 49,000 survivors of a surprise attack by a race of sentient machines, known as Cylons, who were created by humans some 58 years previously. (A plot making it just as relevant today as it was in the aftermath of 9/11 when it was released, albeit for different reasons.)

The titular Battlestar Galactica is commanded by a man called William Adama, a model of stoicism any man (or woman) would do well to emulate.

For example,  in the episode “Hand of God” from season one, he imparts the following wisdom to one of his pilots in the ops room as a major mission she planned begins to go awry:

===

Lt. Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace: I never wanted this kind of responsibility.

Commander William Adama: The Cylons never asked us what we wanted. Welcome to the big leagues.

===

On the face of it, very little to do with getting strong and in shape.

But for the serious person who isn’t afraid of a little thinking, many valuable lessons lie in that little exchange.

Chief among them being that life burdens you with obligations (things you are required to do) and responsibilities (things that you ought to do) and your decision to step up to meet them or not will give you the measure of your character.

Observe that I said “step up to meet them” and not “succeed”.

The outcome is thoroughly unimportant because there are too many factors outside of your control that influence it.

Your decision to Do The Right Thing, however, is yours and yours alone.

Make of that what you will.

On a distantly related note, I’ve made one of my Bargain Bucket Books available as a paperback for those who prefer their information on Real Paper and/or don’t have a Kindle.

The title in question is called:

“Train Like a Warrior”

It’s a series of ten essays Train Like a Warrior is a series of ten essays, each covering a different warrior from history and following the same format:

* Edutaining information about their weapons, armour, fighting style, and battlefield role,

* The athletic qualities they would need to execute their duties and avoid an untimely demise,

* A straightforward training programme to develop those qualities using modern methods for you to analyse, and, potentially, adapt to suit your own noble purposes.
